Who We Are

Communio is an initiative of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) since 2018, to assist, support, and sustain all our Dioceses and Religious Congregations working in rural and mission areas in their pastoral ministry. We assure building Catholic communities by transforming interdependence to solidarity.

What We Do

We encourage every Catholic to pray for missions and our missionaries. We facilitate the formation of Missionary Disciples, who live the joy of the Gospel.

Prayer
“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you!” (3 Jn 2). The understanding of our rootedness in God enables our hearts connected in prayer for one another. We encourage every Catholic to pray for missions and our missionaries.
Solidarity
“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (Jn 13:35). The identity of Christian discipleship unfolds in love, through which we, in our openness, contribute with our hands. We enable everyone to generously contribute for the evangelization ministry of the Church.
Mission
“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news?” (Rm 10:15). We, who are called in baptism, are constantly sent forth in mission, that with cultivated minds we may reach out to everyone in need. We facilitate the formation of Missionary disciples, who live the joy of the Gospel.

We Assure

We enable everyone to generously contribute
for the evangelization ministry of the Church

Hearts in Prayer, Minds in Mission, and Hands in Solidarity.

To enkindle the Catholic Church in India with zeal for faith formation and proclamation, that being empowered in self-sufficiency and self-reliance, the Catholic faithful will collaborate for creative synergy in the peripheries of mission.

  • To build a culture of sharing among the Catholic faithful in order to express solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need.
  • To encourage the faithful to pray, and to support the missions and the missionaries, and to promote vocations to consecrated life.
  • To inspire the lay faithful to volunteer to work in mission areas.
  • To envisage the formation of our people as missionary disciples.

History

The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), established in 1988, after the launch of the National Pastoral Plan in 2013, conceived the idea at different stages, and ‘Communio’ saw its light in 2017, at the XXIX Plenary Assembly held in Bhopal.

The celebration of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy (8 Dec 2015 to 20 Nov 2016) announced by our Holy Father Pope Francis, and the canonisation Mother Teresa of Kolkata, a model of mercy and compassion, propelled the launch.

This historical decision to begin ‘Communio’ to help poor dioceses and religious congregations working in the missions was taken when the Executive Committee members of the CCBI gathered at St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore, on 20 September 2016.

The first Communio Sunday was observed at the national level on 2 December 2018, the First Sunday of Advent. ‘Communio’was registered as a legal entity in 2021.
