Recognizing the growing need for well-formed leaders in the family apostolate, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) Family Commission, in collaboration with the Peyton Institute for Families, Fr Arul Raj CSC is currently organizing a 22-day national programme on “Leadership of Family Ministry.” Held at the Peyton Institute in Bangalore from June 1 to 22, 2025, the programme brings together 20 selected participants from across the country.
This intensive training aims to provide a holistic formation for those engaged in family ministry, covering pastoral leadership, counselling, theology of the family, synodal engagement, and programme evaluation. Participants are equipped to accompany families, animate communities, and build networks of faith and life in diverse social and pastoral settings.
An integral part of the programme is the introduction and integration of Communio, the CCBI’s pastoral initiative focused on supporting rural missions and empowering lay participation. Through Communio, the Church promotes a culture of sharing, solidarity, and missionary commitment, which is particularly relevant to strengthening families in marginalised and rural communities.
In a special session, Fr. Vignan Das presented the history of the Church in India, explained the structure and mission of the CCBI, and introduced the vision of Communio. His talk offered insights into how Communio serves as a channel for mission support and pastoral innovation, encouraging participants to engage with the initiative as part of their local mission efforts. The session concluded with an energetic action song, reflecting the enthusiasm among participants.
The day also featured a compelling session by Fr. Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI, who spoke on the theme Bringing Passionate Leaders for the Family Apostolate. Fr. Alathara shared from his own pastoral experience, highlighting that passion, more than position or skill, is what sustains ministry. His reflections inspired participants to embrace their vocation with renewed energy and vision.
Another session was led by Sr. Margarita Dias SCB, who focused on Making a Difference in the Family Apostolate through the Opportunities Around Us. Through engaging videos, interactive activities, and personal examples from her ministry with children and youth, Sr. Margarita encouraged participants to become builders of life, hope, and communion in their communities.
The training programme continues to offer a dynamic blend of pastoral formation, theological grounding, and missionary inspiration. Through its integration of Communio’s mission and structure, the initiative is not only shaping competent leaders, but also fostering a spirit of communion, collaboration, and outreach among those called to serve the families of India.
This journey is a step toward forming missionary disciples who are equipped and inspired to strengthen family life and contribute meaningfully to the life and mission of the Church in India.
