Dibrugarh, July 5, 2024: A relief service for flood affected families in Assam was organized by Communio and Aviral Outreach Society through the CCBI Commission for Women and Migrants. The teams from Bishop House began distributing provisions in Panibura, a village located two hours from Dibrugarh town. Approximately 200 families in Panibura have been severely impacted by the flood with the initial distribution reaching 110 families. The provisions included rice, potatoes, dal, salt, and oil. The team comprised staff and volunteers from Bishop House, local leaders, and members of the Women’s Commission and youth directors.
Previously, the team conducted a survey to identify the most affected areas and decided to prioritize Panibura. The village is submerged by a nearby river, causing houses to collapse and forcing residents to live by the roadside. The team has constructed boats from banana stems to transport food provisions to homes that are still standing but uninhabitable at night
Fr. Philip Purty and Fr. Sanjiv Ekka along with commission members were involved in visiting families and providing essential items based on a pre-prepared list of affected families. Despite the challenging conditions, the team managed to distribute the provisions efficiently. The team plans to resume the distribution the next day.
